Final Creative Critical Reflection

How do your products represent social groups or issues? Mental health has become one of the most prevalent social issues, especially in a post-COVID world where many people are struggling with a return to normalcy. People spent months and years isolated from those around them. Teenagers missed out on crucial developmental years. Now, teens are struggling with mental health illnesses like anxiety and depression, and most are disconnected from essential support and resources. In the United States, those struggling with mental health illnesses have become stigmatized and are seen as dangerous and incompetent individuals, rather than being unwell.  Teens were participating in school online for almost two academic years and were away from their friends. The sudden change in reality that occurred because of the pandemic, has given teens time for reflection and personal growth. In the midst of personal development, the state of loneliness and being away from family and friends, has proven...

Creative Critical Reflection Draft

“A Teacher's Hand” reflects on the relationship between teachers and students at school, academically and personally.  Mental health has become one of the most prevalent social issues, especially in a post-COVID world where kids might struggle with a return to normalcy. There is a stigma around mental health, often seen in a negative view, there is a stereotype created around those struggling with mental health illnesses. However, this is far from the truth. Mental health is an issue that is important to every person, and in the United States, it is becoming especially prevalent among teenagers.  A large portion of Generation Z has spent important developmental years doing school online and away from their friends. This distance from what life used to be like has left many alone and struggling. Now as students return to school, they spend most of their time in an environment they have to get used to again. Challenging Conventions

Throughout the research process of my project, I analyzed Burgers of Karachi , Tap Mun , and DJ’s of Osman , among other documentaries to understand how films tells a story through different camera and editing techniques.   In  Burgers of Karachi , I learned how unconventional techniques can amplify a film. In the film, the director added behind the scene footage of city life to show how the culture in Karachi, Pakistan has changed throughout the year. The director included a montage of footage of what life in the city looks like. Techniques that utilize unconventional aspects of a film have sequences that act as an outlier, but allows leaves the audience with a bigger impact through the story told. I wanted to include something similar as I was producing my documentary. After receiving feedback and editing the early parts of my film, I decided I wanted to add a reel of photos of students and teachers from around my school. I placed the reel at the end of the film before the ...

House Color

In the pre-production process of the documentary, I had to find a set of colors that matched the feeling I was creating through my story. In class, we had studied the color semiotic theory and analyzed how different colors are associated with different feelings and emotions. After researching, I came upon a color palette of red, orange, and yellow, colors that are typically associated with a sunset and feelings of optimism and friendliness.  Once I had the house colors set, I began to use them in different parts of the film. As I created by production logo, I used the colors in a gradient style creating a comfortable and calm environment within my production company title. The logo was then used to create the stop-motion title card that is played in the beginning of the film.  In the post-production stage of the documentary, I kept the house colors in mind when designing the title "A Teacher's Hand" and how it appeared on screen. In the magazine component of my project, I...
