Throughout the research process of my project, I analyzed Burgers of Karachi, Tap Mun, and DJ’s of Osman, among other documentaries to understand how films tells a story through different camera and editing techniques.
In Burgers of Karachi, I learned how unconventional techniques can amplify a film. In the film, the director added behind the scene footage of city life to show how the culture in Karachi, Pakistan has changed throughout the year. The director included a montage of footage of what life in the city looks like. Techniques that utilize unconventional aspects of a film have sequences that act as an outlier, but allows leaves the audience with a bigger impact through the story told.
I wanted to include something similar as I was producing my documentary. After receiving feedback and editing the early parts of my film, I decided I wanted to add a reel of photos of students and teachers from around my school. I placed the reel at the end of the film before the credits roll as it emphasized the relationship of support being told throughout the film.
