Two Methods to Storyboarding

Storyboarding is essential to the production of a film. It provides a way to visualize the entire film before getting the equipment and cast to produce it. Through detailed work whether visual or written, a good storyboard should show the information needed.

Through the two ways described in the youtube video by Media Studies Insider, there are five main components to include in a storyboard: mise en scene, camera work, editing, shot duration, sound.

One thing I learned from the video is that one's art skills don’t need to be advanced for a storyboard. It is all about visualizing the entire movie in advance. The video used Peter Jackson with Lord of The Rings as an example of a successful film with a well executed storyboard.

The video described two ways to approach the story board:

More Art:

  • Include emotion into drawing

  • Detail lighting

    • Ex: How many shadows, how dark, how light will the scene be ?

  • You can include labels to easier identify

  • Has to make sense to the person marking your work

  • Draw boxes and arrows to show how the camera moves

  • For sound draw music sign and describe the sound

  • For different shortcuts draw visuals or write them out

More Words:

  • With stickmen oftentimes

  • More detailed descriptions on the side fill in the information on the emotion, lighting, camera movement

  • You can use colors for distinguishing characters in shots

  • Use terms like shot 1A/shot 1B for multiple frames

  • For different shortcuts draw visuals or write them out

When approaching my storyboard for my film, I will practice beforehand with drawing certain images in my head and describing them to figure out which way I believe will be more effective. By using key terminology on my storyboard I will ensure that all the information needed to visualize my film is there to both myself and others.
