Cinematography 101- Telling Stories Visually Notes

  • Images are key to good storytelling

  • Cinematography: playing back moving images within the frame

  • Anything that is not captured in the frame did not happen

  • Changes to the frame, camera, lens, field of vision should be done with a purpose

  • Keep the audience in mind. How do you relate this to them ?

  • Different camera angles can enhance the story in different ways

  • Lighting is key, always ensure the image is being taken clearly

  • Depth of fields can achieve specific looks or effects that give more meaning to a certain situation

  • Exposure can affect moods and feelings that are created

  • Understand file formats in order to avoid difficulties later on

  • Slow motion and time lapse can add more detail to the images. It all comes down to what the creator is trying to present to the audience.

  • Good scripts convey mood, feeling of the work leading to storyboarding

  • Set a good amount of time into production

  • Keep researching, keep practicing

The lessons I have learned through researching cinematography, storyboarding, and production, will give me a basis of understanding and instruction when I begin my film. It’s important to understand the different aspects of film to better convey the story I will be telling.

Although it's early, I plan to involve several camera angles and frame times to develop my film. These methods will make the story more engaging and give the audience a better understanding of the purpose.
